Title: The Impact of the 2024 El Nino drought in Zimbabwe: a case study of Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe
Abstract: This study investigates the impact of the 2024 El Niño drought in Zimbabwe, with a specific focus on Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe (UMP) district. The aim of the study was to assess the effects of the drought on agriculture, food security, and livelihoods in UMP. The objectives of the study were to examine the impacts of the drought on crop yields and livestock productivity, to assess the effects of the drought on household food security and livelihoods, and to identify coping strategies employed by households to mitigate the effects of the drought. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis methods. The study revealed that the 2024 El Niño drought had devastating impacts on agriculture, food security, and livelihoods in UMP. The findings suggest that crop yields and livestock productivity declined significantly, leading to food insecurity and livelihood disruptions. However, the study also identified coping strategies employed by households, including diversification of livelihoods and use of drought-tolerant crops. The study concludes that the 2024 El Niño drought highlighted the vulnerability of UMP to climate-related disasters and the need for sustainable livelihoods and climate-resilient agriculture. The study recommends that policymakers and stakeholders prioritize the development of climate-resilient agriculture and livelihoods, and provide support to households to adapt to climate-related disasters.
