- Abstract
- This research study was an investigation into effects of using multi-media instructional resources in teaching physics at ordinary level focusing on high schools in Harare district. It focused on understand how these resources affect student learning and engagement during instruction, while also exploring the challenges and opportunities associated with their use in the context of Zimbabwean education system. A quasi experimental design was employed to provide insights into cause-and-effect relationships between the use of multimedia instructional tools and teaching of physics in real-world learning contexts. A sample of 60 students and 5 teachers who were purposefully selected were assigned to either an experimental or control group. The experimental group received interactive videos and animations on one of the popular topics in physics at Ordinary level (Newton’s laws of motion) while the control group received traditional instruction on the same topic. Teachers who had received training on the use of multimedia technology in physics instruction participated in the study. Data was collected through interviewing teachers and students. Tests were also administered to get data on performance of the learners after the intervention. The results showed that students in the experimental group performed significantly better in the post test, demonstrating a deeper understanding of concepts taught. The findings suggest that multimedia instruction can significantly improve understanding of physics concepts, but its effects depends on teacher training and support. The study contributes to the existing body of research output on technology-enhanced learning, highlighting the potential of multimedia instruction to enhance student learning outcomes and teacher attitudes in physics.
