Abstract

The implementation of school based projects has been widely recognized as an effective pedagogical approach to enhance student learning and outcomes in secondary education. In contemporary education, the integration of school based-projects into the heritage based curriculum has become increasingly important, particularly at the secondary education level. These projects encourage learners to engage in practical, hands on learning experiences that not only reinforce theoretical knowledge but also foster critical thinking, collaboration, and problem solving skills. However, research suggests that the success of such projects largely depends on the preparedness and support provided by teachers. The objective of this study was to explore the state of preparedness of mathematics teachers in integrating school based projects at secondary level. Three research questions were raised and data was collected from twenty-six mathematics teachers doing a Bachelor of Science education degree in mathematics at Bindura University of Science education. A mixed methods research was employed, involving a twenty – four item questionnaires and twenty-one item interview guide were administered to twenty-six mathematics teachers. 20 of the participants completed the questionnaire and six subjects were interviewed on challenges faced when planning and implementing school based projects, the current level of preparedness of mathematics teachers to integrate school based projects and strategies that can be put in place to enhance the preparedness of mathematics teachers. The results indicate that while mathematics teachers reported a low level of knowledge about school based projects, they lacked the necessary skills and confidence to design and implement effective school based projects. The findings also reveal that teachers do not have adequate information, necessary resources needed to effectively integrate school based projects at secondary level. The study highlights the need for targeted professional development programs, trainings on school based projects, school administrative support to enhance teacher preparedness and improve the effectiveness of school based projects at the secondary level.
