- Abstract
- The research examined the environmental impacts of chemical processes in water treatment in Bindura municipality which included an interrogation on the effects of chemicals frequently used in water treatment and suggested strategies for reducing the negative effects of these chemicals. The study adopted a mixed method approach characterised by the use of qualitative and quantitative research methods, and ultimately used the exploratory sequential research design which also involved the collection of qualitative data first, followed by quantitative data to validate the research findings. A sample of 40 participants selected through purposive, and simple random sampling techniques was used while data was collected using questionnaire, open ended interview, and observation methods. The data were presented in tables, graphs, pie charts and in verbatim in cases of the data that could not be quantified while the same analysed using thematic analysis which involved coding of data into themes. Research findings suggest that participants were familiar with some of the chemicals used and confirmed that chlorine, alum (aluminium sulphate), lime, and sodium hypochlorite were commonly used for disinfection, coagulation, and pH adjustment. Research also found that the chemical processes are useful for biodiversity conservation on local ecosystems, prevention of contamination, protecting public health and raising awareness about the importance of protecting aquatic ecosystems from harmful chemicals. The study recommended using treated wastewater for irrigation, industrial processes and toilet flashing purposes to help conserve fresh water, and reduce the impact which could be effective if greener alternatives such as ozone or UV treatment chlorine are adopted.
