This study evaluates the waste management practices at Koala Abattoir, a critical examination given the potential impacts on human, animal, and environmental health, as inadequate waste disposal can lead to disease transmission, water contamination, and ecosystem degradation. The facility processes approximately 270 animals daily, generating large quantities of waste that require proper disposal to prevent environmental pollution. Employing a mixed-methods approach, our assessment revealed significant gaps in environmental compliance, inadequate waste monitoring, and insufficient pollution control measures. Key parameters such as [pH] (Potential of Hydrogen), [BOD] (Biochemical Oxygen Demand), and [COD] (Chemical Oxygen Demand) were not adequately monitored. Statistical analysis confirmed that current waste management practices are inadequate and ineffective, with substantial quantities of solid (2,400 kg/day) and liquid waste (1,650 L/day) generated. The study highlights the need for improved waste management practices, including upgraded effluent treatment systems, enhanced staff training, and strengthened waste monitoring and auditing. By implementing these interventions, Koala Abattoir can enhance its waste management performance, ensure regulatory compliance, and contribute to a more sustainable livestock industry. The study's findings and recommendations can be applied to other abattoirs, promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. Overall, this study emphasizes the importance of proper waste management practices in abattoirs and provides a roadmap for improvement.
