- Abstract
- The research undertaken was to analyze the profitability of producing organic garlic in ward 26, Chegutu District in Zimbabwe. The objectives of the study were to determine the profitability of organic garlic, to analyze the factors affecting profitability of organic garlic and to define the challenges faced by organic garlic producers. The researcher used quantitative researcher (predictive correlation) with a sample size of 70 households using structured questionnaire. Purposive data sampling was employed using bucket method. Data analytical tools used were gross margin to determine the profitability of organic garlic, multiple linear regression to analyze the factors affecting the profitability of organic garlic and Likert Scale to define the challenges faced by organic garlic producers. The results obtained from gross margin indicated that farmers obtained positive returns of USD 991.09 per acre and the profitable test (t = 2.40). Multiple linear regression for factors affecting the gross margin reveals farm size being the most significance ( 0,001), extension services(0.025), farming experience(0.0035, cost of production(0.004), membership in farmer group(0.021) and income(0.015) factor affecting profitability positively. The main constraint faced by the organic garlic producers is the lack of information with mean score (3.49) with 54.3% of farmers agreeing and strongly agreeing and high cost of certification with the least mean score of (3.11) is also a notable burden with 48.6% in agreement. In conclusion the production of organic garlic was profitable, has few factors impacting profitability and challenges therefore it can be well managed by the farmer to produce profit.
