Exploring students’ difficulties in studying chemistry

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the multifaceted challenges that hinder student engagement and performance in chemistry education. The research aimed to; identify key factors contributing to students’ difficulties in understanding chemistry concepts; to assess the impact of teaching methods on student engagement and learning outcomes, and to recommend strategies to improve retention and performance in chemistry. The study was grounded in behaviourism and social learning theories. These examine how reinforcement, peer interaction, and observational learning shape students’ attitudes and comprehension. These theoretical lenses provided insight into both individual learning behaviours and classroom dynamics. A mixed methods approach was used. There were qualitative insights from in-depth teacher interviews. Simple random sampling was used to select 20 students and 5 teachers, ensuring balanced representation and minimizing selection bias. Key findings reveal that students struggle with mathematical applications, laboratory limitations, abstract terminology, and interdisciplinary integration. Motivation emerged as a critical barrier, with chemistry being perceived as a difficult and inaccessible subject. Teachers cited time constraints, resource shortages, and rigid syllabi as impediments to effective instruction. The study concludes that improving chemistry education requires systemic and pedagogical reform. Recommended strategies include integrating technology, diversifying teaching methods, enhancing laboratory access, promoting self-efficacy, and facilitating expert-led seminars. These interventions aim to foster a more inclusive, engaging, and supportive learning environment, ultimately strengthening students’ conceptual understanding and academic success in chemistry.
