- Abstract
- This study was conceived on the realisation that despite previous efforts, teaching and learning of biology is still very low among secondary schools in Ruwa. It is set to investigate factors affecting effective teaching and learning of biology among students in secondary schools in Ruwa, Zimbabwe. The study employed a case study approach where a total number of 37 students, 8 biology teachers and 3 heads of departments of the three selected schools were involved. Data collection was achieved through use of questionnaires and structured interviews. Microsoft Excel and SPSS were tools used to analyze the data collected. Main findings of the study showed that the study of biology was being affected by poor methodology being used, shortage of resources and inadequate facilities in the selected schools. However, it is being recommended that the government should make the necessary efforts to motivate the teaching staff, provide adequate funding for the procurement of relevant materials to enhance effective teaching and of biology in the secondary schools. In addition teachers should embrace modern technology and incorporate a variety of teaching methodologies to motivate and sustain student interest.
