The study sought to examine the influence of teacher- pupil interaction on pupils’ participation and academic performance in the study of Advanced level human Geography. The study also established the methods of teaching that the teacher can employ which enhances high teacher- pupil interaction and stimulates high pupils’ participation and achieve high academic performance. Data were collected using observations and Focus Group discussion (FGDs). The study found that teacher-pupil interaction is key in enhancing pupil participation and improving academic performance. The study also concluded that teaching method has an influence on pupils’ level of participation and the resulting academic performance. Pupils participate more when there is high teacher- pupil interaction which is enhanced by pupil- centred methods of teaching such as group learning activities e.g. group works and collaborative learning as well as pair works. On the other hand the study established that teacher- centred methods such as the lecture method have a low teacher-pupil interaction and hence low participation of pupils resulting in low academic performance. The study recommends that teachers ought to employ pupil- centred methods of teaching to enhance pupils’ participation and a high academic performance in Advanced Level Human Geography.
