- Abstract
- The study sought to investigate the the use of smartphones in the teaching and learning of vectors at ordinary level school in Mwenezi district the major case being a case of selected Secondary School. The objectives of the study were to to determine the extent to which Mathematics teachers incorporate the use of smart phones in their teaching models, to ascertain the importance of smart phones in the teaching and learning of vectors at Ordinary level, to establish the challenges that are encountered in trying to incorporate the use of smart phones in the teaching and learning of vectors. It was from these objectives that the researcher managed to come up with research questions. The research is significant to selected Secondary School, Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, teachers, parents, learners and future researchers. Literature review was guided by the research objectives which formed most of the major subheadings and other major issues which were brought forward were the theoretical framework in this case the researcher used the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) framework, The researcher used mixed methodology approach that is incorporating both quantitative (use of questionnaires) and qualitative research designs (use of (interviews). A target population of 77 respondents was considered and from this target population the researcher noted that 32 people respondents. The researcher used purposive and stratified sampling to carry out this study. From the research findings the researcher noted that smartphones are being incorporated in the teaching and learning of vectors in secondary schools. The researcher noted that most of the students at selected Secondary school own smartphones researcher noted that smartphones are important in the teaching and learning of Mathematics (Vectors) as they enhance student engagement also helps in sharpening research skills of learners, The results also showed that smartphones are important as they make learning of mathematics interesting. However, despites the advantages of smartphones in the teaching and learning process the researcher also noted that integrating smartphones in the teaching and learning comes with challenges. Some of the challenges heighted included the lack of technological skills from mathematics teachers. Students are also destructed by smartphones as they tend to use social media during learning sessions. Shortage of smartphones to all learners, unavailability of policy guidelines by the school on the use of smartphones are some of the major challenges highlighted. The researcher concluded that smartphones are useful in the teaching and learning of vectors but it do have limitations. The researcher recommends that secondary schools should have guidelines on the use of smartphones in the teaching and learning. There is need for schools to have both soft and hard infrastructure that supports the use of smartphones in the teaching and learning process.
