This study sought to explore factors influencing rural female learners’ progression in
education. Data generation, analysis and interpretation was grounded in interpretivist
paradigm and qualitative approach. The researcher used document analysis, and personal interviews in generating data. In this study twenty - five rural female learners and six class teachers were purposively selected to form the sample for this study. The generated data was analysed according to themes derived from the formulated research questions. Findings of the study revealed that though, there are
policies advocating for equal participation and progression of learners in education at
the school under investigation learners have limited access to these documents. In addition, it was noted that the way rural female learners are socialized has an influence on their behavior at school. This in a way plays a critical roles when rural female learners make decision on whether to progress or not to progress with their education. It was also revealed that rural female learners in their progression in education encounter challenges such as stereotyping, lack of role models, work load at home, home to school distance, etc. From the findings the following strategies were proposed as a way of overcoming the challenges: empower rural female learners through workshops of gender equality and equity. From the generated, analyzed data
and interpreted data, the researcher reached the conclusion that the continued dropping out of education by rural female learners was due to multiple factors such as social, economic and among others. The researcher recommends that parents or guardians should transform their mind-sets towards the rural female learners’ progression in education. - Date
