- Abstract
- High failure rate in mathematics at ordinary level is a cause of concern. The aim of this study was to analyse students performance in mathematics at ordinary level. The research is a case study of three selected schools in Gutu East with a qualitative approach . Questionnaires and interviews were used to gather data. The target population consisted of ordinary level students and mathematics teachers, all taken from three selected schools. The sample group was accessed through purposive sampling consisting of three mathematics teachers and twenty four mathematics students. Data collected was presented through the effective use of tables, pie charts and bar graphs. The study established that students performance in mathematics is influenced by learners attitudes, availability of resources, teacher qualifications ,teaching methods among others. Recommendations were made to mathematics teachers, schools administration and the curriculum planners on strategies that can be adopted to improve students performance in mathematics. In this study, it was recommended that the ministry of primary and secondary education should organize in-service training for mathematics teachers, provide resources and revise the curriculum of teacher training institutions
