- This study explores the relative effectiveness of peer tutoring strategy in improving secondary school students` academic performance in chemistry at ordinary level in Seke District. This research identified the benefits of a peer tutoring strategy in improving students’ performance in chemistry, determine the students and teachers’ perceptions towards peer tutoring strategy, establish the prevalent challenges faced by secondary school teachers in applying peer tutoring strategy as well as determining the strategies implemented in curbing challenges faced by secondary school teachers in applying peer tutoring strategy. A case study of one school in Seke District was used for the research through a case study approach, with data collected through questionnaires and interviews. The study established that peer tutoring strategy is a powerful teaching method that can influence teaching and learning process in secondary schools. Peer tutoring strategy proved to be beneficial to both teachers and students in the process of teaching and learning. Study findings also revealed that peer tutoring assists in sharing of information, working in a collaborative way and learning in an autonomous way which indicated that a general agreement that peer tutoring helps the students in their tasks to work together. Peer tutoring use in the teaching and learning also positively impacts on students in the teaching and learning process. Peer tutoring generate three significant milestones: access to teaching and learning chances; cultivating the quality of learning and teaching; and distributing oneness amongst students. The study recommends teachers and students to have positive attitude on the use of peer tutoring strategy in the process of teaching and learning. The ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should provide the equipment in schools because school are failing to provide adequate peer tutoring that can be used in the process of teaching and learning process. Teachers and learners should be trained on how to use peer tutoring in the process of teaching and learning. Governments should improve the training of HOD's, teachers and students on the use of computers and other ICT equipment which can assist in peer tutoring through seminars, workshops and in-service training.
