- Abstract
- The study investigates the impact of multimedia on chemistry education, focusing on Mavhuradonha High School, Mt. Darwin in Zimbabwe. The research explored how multimedia resources, such as animations, simulations, and videos, enhance student comprehension and engagement in chemistry. The objectives of the study were: to evaluate how multimedia influences students’ understanding of complex chemistry concepts; to identify challenges faced by educators in implementing these tools; and to recommend strategies for improving multimedia integration in secondary school chemistry instruction. The research was guided by the Universal Design for Learning (UDL), which emphasizes inclusive and flexible learning environments, and Social Learning Theory, which highlights the role of observation and collaboration in knowledge acquisition. A mixed-methods approach was adopted. It combined qualitative and quantitative data collection. Structured questionnaires were administered to 25 students, while in-depth interviews were conducted with 5 chemistry teachers. Purposive sampling ensured that participants had direct experience with multimedia in the classroom. Key findings reveal that multimedia significantly improves visualization, retention, and accessibility of chemistry concepts. However, challenges such as intermittent electricity, high data costs, and limit access to devices. Distractions from digital platforms also emerges as a concern. The study concludes that multimedia enhances chemistry learning when supported by adequate infrastructure and teacher training. Recommendations include investing in solar power systems, affordable digital devices, offline learning platforms, and stakeholder collaboration to ensure equitable access and sustainable integration of multimedia in Zimbabwean science education.
