This study investigates the level of community preparedness for flood disasters in Mbire District Ward 9, Zimbabwe, an area increasingly vulnerable to climate-induced flood events. The research aims to evaluate existing preparedness strategies, identify the barriers communities face, and explore possible improvements from the perspective of the local population. The study is underpinned by the Pressure and Release (PAR) model, Social Vulnerability Theory, and Resilience Theory to frame vulnerability, risk, and adaptive capacity within the rural Zimbabwean context. A mixed-methods research design was adopted, combining quantitative data from questionnaires with qualitative insights obtained through interviews and field observations. The results revealed that community preparedness is low, primarily due to limited access to early warning systems, inadequate infrastructure, low literacy levels, and economic constraints. Barriers such as language and communication issues, community reluctance to share information, and lack of government and institutional support were also evident. The study further highlights significant demographic disparities affecting disaster readiness, such as differences in education levels, household sizes, and gender roles. Community members suggested strategies including strengthening local disaster education programs, increasing institutional collaboration, and improving physical infrastructure as means to enhance flood preparedness. The study concludes that while Mbire District Ward 9 demonstrates some resilience, there is a pressing need for integrated, community-centred disaster risk reduction interventions. Recommendations include capacity-building initiatives, improved communication channels, policy support, and targeted funding to bolster household and community readiness for future flood events.
