- Abstract
- This study explores the negative impact of social background on the performance of secondary school athletes in independent schools in Harare. It investigates how factors such as family income, parental education, access to resources, and social support affect students' participation and achievement in sports. Using a mixed-methods approach, data was collected through surveys and interviews with athletes, coaches, and school administrators across selected independent schools. The findings reveal that students from less privileged backgrounds face challenges such as limited access to quality training facilities, poor nutrition, and psychological stress, all of which hinder their athletic development and performance. The study concludes that despite being in well-resourced schools, social inequalities persist and influence student-athletes differently. Recommendations include policy adjustments to ensure equal opportunities and targeted support for disadvantaged athletes.
