- Abstract
- The study aimed in assessing the state of healthcare infrastructure and service delivery capacity so as to improve cholera management in Chegutu. The study used a sample size of 75 respondents. It identified components of hardware and software infrastructure available in Chegutu for cholera management and also the capacity of the healthcare personnel in responding to cholera outbreak. The infrastructure for cholera prevention showed that awareness of health posters about cholera prevention is 64% followed by trained health personnel for cholera management. Qualitative and quantitative analysis was employed on data collected. A questionnaire consisting of both open and close ended questions was administered to selected households and 68 of them were successful while 7 were not. The research findings showed that there is low awareness levels of critical hardware infrastructure for cholera management thereby exposing gaps in both availability and visibility. The results also showed that there is a huge dependence on piped municipal piped water as the primary source for above half of the households. For the capacity of healthcare personnel in responding to cholera outbreak the findings showed that the response time taken by the healthcare personnel in responding to the previous outbreak was a cause of concern. There is critical failure in the timeliness and visibility of healthcare personnel response during cholera outbreaks.
