- Globally, Hospital Acquired Infections (HAIs) have become an increasingly challenging issue. The prevention and control of infections is critical as there are recorded morbidity and mortality rates which are alarming. However, no significant data have been recorded on HAIs and infection prevention and control (IPC) at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital, Mutare, Zimbabwe making it also a complex issue in the country’s healthcare facilities due to unavailability of significant data recorded. The study assessed knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of Health Care Workers regarding infection prevention and control practices at Victoria Chitepo Provincial Hospital. A mixed methods approach was adopted in this cross-sectional study. The study population was drawn from Victoria Chitepo Hospital staff which included Doctors, Nurses, and Laboratory Technicians as well as support staff comprising of Nurse Aides and General Hands. Purposive sampling was used in selection of the participants. Data collection tools included interview guides and questionnaires with both open ended and closed items. A total of 62 responded to Questionnaires and interviews items. Quantitative data was analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences and presented in tables, graphs and charts. Qualitative data was presented verbatim. The study revealed that being knowledgeable does not necessarily predict good practice as positive attitude and good behaviour contributes to effective IPC practice. While healthcare workers have adequate knowledge and a favourable attitude toward infection prevention, more effort is required in practice. Thus, there is a need to support and improve infection control and prevention practices.
