- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to design a culturally-appropriate, performance-enhancing nutrition plan for the Royal Comfort Junior Rugby Team. By examining current nutritional practices, knowledge gaps, and contextual limitations that these young athletes are faced with, this research aims to formulate a workable nutrition plan that promotes athletic performance while considering the socioeconomic and cultural realities of junior rugby in Zimbabwe. The research explored foods eaten, nutritional health perceptions and structural hindrances for young athletes in Harare Zimbabwe. The integration of both detailed quantitative and qualitative data enabled the development of a nutrition framework that was culturally relevant and feasible. The study has achieved its main aim to create an adapted performance-based nutrition plan for the Royal Comfort Junior Rugby Team by clearly identifying and examining various issues that affect the dietary behaviors and nutritional needs of a junior contact sports player. The mixed-methods approach has helped to achieve the study’s sub-aims and progressed to generate evidence-based recommendations for implementable nutrition plans for athletes in resource-limited settings.
