- The research was an exploration on grade two learners’ addition and subtraction word-problem solving capabilities in Ward 4 Primary school in Beitbridge district east, Matabeleland South province, Zimbabwe. The research study explored capabilities, reflected difficulties experienced by grade two learners in solving addition and subtraction word-problems and the factors affecting addition and subtraction word problem-solving. The Mixed-Methods research methodology and a descriptive survey research design were used in this research study. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to collect relevant data from learners and teachers using observations, surveys, tests and structured interviews. The data was presented in form of bar graphs and tables. The main causes and possible solutions to the difficulties in addition and subtraction word-problem solving were examined. Some of the challenges included large teacher-learner ratios, shortage of resources especially ICT tools, teachers' conceptual misunderstanding and reliance on limited learning strategies among many others. 67% of the learners had challenges in comprehension, application and misconceptions in addition and subtraction word problem-solving. The MOPSE (Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education) need to address the instructional issues with regular staff development programs, provision of more teachers in schools and provision of effective education support resources.
