- The Adoption of digital technology: the role of GPS tracking in monitoring player load in the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League (ZPSL)
- Abstract
- The study investigates the adoption of digital technology, specifically Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking in monitoring player load within the Zimbabwean Premier Soccer League (ZPSL). It explores how GPS technology influences player performance, injury prevention, and welfare. A mixed method approach was employed combining quantitative surveys with qualitative interviews to better understand technology usage and challenges. The study targeted professional football coaches and technical staff across ZPSL, clubs, with 100 survey respondents and 15 purposively selected interview participants. Quantitative data were analysed using SPSS, while NVivo facilitated thematic analysis of quantitative data. Findings revealed a growing awareness and positive perception of GPS tracking benefits, particularly in improving player performance and reducing injuries. However, implementation remains inconsistent due to limited training in data interpretations, financial constraints, and resistance to technological changes. ANOVA results showed that insufficient training was statistically significant barrier (p=0.025). Thematic analysis identified five key themes training and education, data integration, communication and engagement, technical support, and player motivation. Participants emphasised that continuous professional development and collaborations between coaches, players, and management are critical for successful adoption. The study concludes that while ZPSL stakeholders recognise the value of GPS tracking, its potential is underutilised due to skill and resource gaps. The study recommends comprehensive training programmes, technical support systems, and policy-driven investments in digital infrastructure to enhance technology uptake and optimise player monitoring. These findings contribute to growing discourse on sports technology adoption in resource-constrained environments and provide a practical framework for improving player load management in Zimbabwe.
