- The study sought to investigate challenges facing teaching and learning of Geographical Information System (GIS) at ordinary level in Sanyati district, Mashonaland West Province. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the adequacy of current resources and support for GIS education and find strategies that can be used to reduce challenges in teaching and learning of GIS among Ordinary level leaners in Sanyati district. The research was qualitative in nature, questionnaires and interviews were used as instruments to gather information. A Sample of twenty (20) Geography students and five (5) Geography teachers was extracted from a study population of ninety-five (95). Data was analysed using thematic analysis and presented in the form of tables and pie charts. The major findings of the study were that, there is critical shortage of GIS learning resources such as Computers. There is also high shortage of infrastructure for GIS education and as well as lack of training for GIS teachers. These conditions then compromise a meaningful teaching and learning of GIS Ordinary level. The study concludes that, there is critical shortage of GIS teaching and learning resources, GIS education in Sanyati District is characterised by theoretical instructions and GIS teachers received minimal training in GIS methodologies. The researcher recommends that, schools should provide adequate GIS learning equipment, improve the infrastructure and teachers to attend and undergo GIS related workshops, seminars and training sessions.
