Abstract
-
The aim of this study was to explore and improve the technical training practices used by coaches of under-11 girls’ hockey teams in Harare Urban. The research was guided by four main objectives: to identify current training methods, to understand the social and educational factors influencing players' performance, to assess how local training aligns with international standards, and to design and test a context-specific training program to improve both physical performance and psychosocial outcomes. The study used a convergent parallel mixed-methods design, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collected at the same time. Stratified random sampling was used to select a representative group of players, coaches, and sports directors was done for the quantitative part. Questionnaires were used to collect data on training routines, challenges, and performance indicators. For the qualitative part, purposive sampling was used to select 15 participants (coaches and players and sports directors) for semi-structured interviews, focusing on their experiences, views, and opinions about current training programs. Quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS, applying descriptive statistics and correlation analysis, while qualitative data was coded and analyzed using thematic analysis in NVivo 15. The findings showed that while most teams followed structured training programs, there were gaps in areas such as mental conditioning, use of technology, and evaluation methods. There was also a lack of alignment between local training practices and international development standards, especially regarding coach qualifications, diversity and inclusion, and performance tracking. However, participants expressed a strong interest in improving these areas. This study adds value by providing a localized, evidence-based training framework that can be used by schools and sports organizations to enhance young girls’ performance in hockey. It also contributes to academic knowledge by linking practical fieldwork with global training standards in youth sports.
