The Impact of multimedia in the teaching and learning of Biology at a school in Bindura district
- Abstract
- This study explores the impact of multimedia on the teaching and learning of biology at a school in Bindura district .This research uses a mixed-methods approach. Quantitative data were collected through structured questionnaires administered to students and teachers, while qualitative insights were gathered through in-depth interviews with key informants, including educators and the school head. The findings reveal widespread integration of digital tools—such as video lectures, online simulations, digital textbooks, educational mobile applications, and social media platforms—into science instruction, particularly in biology. These tools have enhanced student engagement, facilitated deeper understanding of complex scientific concepts, and enabled flexible and learner-centered education. Students demonstrated improved comprehension, motivation, and retention of knowledge, while teachers reported increased autonomy in delivering personalized and interactive lessons. Despite these benefits, the study identified several systemic barriers to effective implementation. Chief among them are infrastructural challenges including unreliable electricity, poor internet connectivity, and limited access to digital devices and technical support. Additionally, the lack of institutional training and support for educators hampers the full integration of multimedia tools. The study concludes that while digital technologies hold transformative potential for science education, realizing their full impact requires strategic investments in infrastructure, digital resource development, and continuous professional development for teachers. These findings underscore the urgent need for policy and school-level interventions to bridge the digital divide and promote equitable, technology-enhanced learning.
