Abstract

This dissertation explores the intricate landscape of urban informality in Bindura Town, Zimbabwe, within the context of globalisation, examining its drivers, opportunities, and challenges. While existing literature predominantly focuses on informality in major African cities, this study addresses a significant gap by systematically investigating how globalisation's triple dynamics economic flows, socio-cultural diffusion, and governance paradigms transform informal settlements and economic activities in intermediate urban centers. The study persue three key objectives: (1) To explore the drivers of urban informality in the context of globalisation in Bindura Town, (2 ) To identify opportunities presented by globalisation on urban informality in Bindura Town. 3) To examine specific challenges posed by globalisation to the urban informal sector in Bindura Town. Employing a phenomenological approach, this study utilised in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations to gather rich qualitative data from informal vendors and related stakeholders. Key findings reveal that global economic trends, social networks and cultural norms and weak regulatory framework are significant drivers of urban informality. Informal vendors face substantial challenges, including vulnerability to economic shifts, competition from imported goods, and social displacement. However, opportunities emerge from globalisation, as vendors increasingly leverage digital platforms to access broader markets and adapt to changing consumer preferences. The implications of this research highlight the urgent need for targeted policy reforms that enhance support for the informal sector, promote inclusivity, and recognise the contributions of informal workers to local economies. By addressing the gaps identified in the regulatory and support frameworks, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of how urban informality can be effectively integrated into the economic development strategies of Bindura Town, ultimately fostering resilience and sustainable growth in an increasingly globalised environment.
