Abstract
This study examines the factors contributing to the prevalence of child marriages in the Shamva Madziwa community in Zimbabwe. Despite existing legal frameworks and national advocacy campaigns aimed at ending child marriage, the practice remains widespread, particularly in rural areas. Using a qualitative case study approach, the research investigates the socioeconomic, cultural, environmental and institutional drivers of child marriage in the community. Data was collected through interviews, questionnaires, focus group discussions and observations involving local leaders, parents, teachers and affected girls. Findings reveal that poverty, gender inequality, traditional customs, religion, environmental factors, legal and policy gaps, protection of the girl child, peer pressure and limited access to education significantly contribute to the continuation of child marriage. Weak enforcement of legal statutes and minimal community awareness of the long-term consequences further exacerbate the problem. The study also explores community perceptions, which reflect a mix of resignation, cultural justification and increasing concern, particularly among younger and more educated members of the community. The impacts of child marriage identified include disrupted education, exposure to gender-based violence, health complications from early pregnancies, gender inequality, psychological consequences and restricted economic opportunities for girls. These effects perpetuate cycles of poverty and inequality. The study recommends culturally sensitive, community-driven interventions, enhanced education and livelihood opportunities for girls and strengthened enforcement of child protection laws. Overall, the research provides valuable insights into how deeply rooted social and economic factors influence child marriage and highlights the urgent need for inclusive, sustainable solutions.
