- Abstract
- This qualitative study investigations the effects of climate change on women’s care burden and time poverty in Domboshava ward 4. This research aims to pick out major challenges posed by climate change induced drought. Understanding how these impacts influence their time poverty and care burden can help to identify the support needed as their coping strategies. However, research on the effects of climate change on women’s care burden is largely limited especially in Domboshava. The main objective of this study is to examine how prolonged drought exacerbate unpaid care responsibilities such as water collection, preparation of food and taking care of children. A mixed methods approach was employed involving questionnaires, focus group discussions and key informant interviews. Data were collected from a sample size of 58 women using the aforementioned methods. The findings revealed that climate related stressors inordinately burden women, limiting them from participating in economic activities that boost their income levels and food security hence deepening time poverty therefore reinforcing inequalities. Also, women participating travelling on long distance up to 3 kilometres to fetch domestic water. It was thus recommended that addressing water crisis caused by climate change is a positive step towards addressing gendered plight of women in marginalized communities. Policy recommendations include gender responsive climate change adaptations strategies, labour savings technologies and social protection measures to ameliorate these effects. The study underscores the need to integrate care work considerations into resilience building efforts for smallholder farming communities.
