- Refuse and waste service delivery management at Murambinda growth point: challenges and opportunities
- Abstract
- The study examines challenges and opportunities of refuse and waste service delivery management at Murambinda Growth Point. It seeks to identify key issues affecting the efficiency of waste management and to explore practical solutions for improving service delivery. This study addresses the problem of inadequate waste management, that causes significant environmental and public health risks to the community. A qualitative research design was used, grounded in the interpretivist philosophy to capture the lived experiences and perspectives of stakeholders. The study targeted an estimated population of 15,000. Data was collected through questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and two focus group discussions involving participants. The purposive and snowball sampling techniques were used to select local authorities, waste management officials and community members. The data was analyzed thematically to identify key themes and patterns. The findings revealed major challenges such as limited financial resources, weak enforcement of regulations, lack of infrastructure and low community participation. However, there were opportunities which were identified that include potential for public-private partnerships, community-based initiatives and capacity-building efforts. The study concludes that effective waste management at Murambinda Growth Point requires stakeholder collaboration, policy reinforcement and investment in sustainable waste systems. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, local authorities and environmental stakeholders in strengthening waste service delivery strategies in urbanizing rural centers.
