Assessing goat commercialization in smallholder farming: opportunities and challenges. Case study of Nyamanjiwa farm Ward 30 under Murewa district
- Abstract
- The study was done to assess goat commercialization for smallholder farmers in Nyamanjiwa Ward 30 under Murewa District Mashonaland East. The goals of this study were to assess the level of commercialization using the commercialization index, assess factors that affect the commercialization of goat farming for smallholder using linear regression model and lastly, farmers identify the problems smallholder farmers face using a Likert scale. In the area of study, they were 82 farmers who were into goat farming and 68 farmers were selected for the sample size using the Slovin sampling technique. Information from the farmers was gathered through structured surveys and interviews. The level of commercialization was 45% showing that the study area is under semi-commercialization. The results showed that age, number of goats owned, experience, market channel, and educational level have an influence on the commercialization of goat production for smallholder farmers. The challenges which are faced by smallholder farmers include the lack of title deeds, market information, and lack of improved breeds. The researcher recommends that Policymakers and stakeholders must prioritize efforts to address the challenges that are being faced by smallholder farmers. Furthermore, producers should establish cooperatives or associations and pool their resources as opposed to borrowing.
