An Investigation on the productivity and dietary diversity of conservation agriculture practising and non-practising smallholder farmers: a case study of Bindura district

Conservation agriculture (CA) has emerged as a promising approach to address agricultural challenges and enhance food security in Bindura District, Zimbabwe. This descriptive survey research aimed to identify challenges, assess yield variations, and evaluate dietary diversity among CA practicing and non-practicing farmers. A mixed research approach was employed, involving 100 participants selected through random sampling. Data collection utilized questionnaires, key informant interviews, and observations, while analysis was conducted using ANOVA. Results revealed significant challenges in CA implementation, including uneven distribution of resources, shortage of inputs, lack of evidence, untimely distribution of inputs, labor shortages, pests and diseases, and limited security. Furthermore, yield comparison indicated higher average yields among practicing (3.08±0.112) compared to non-practicing (2.49±1.094) farmers, contributing to enhanced agricultural productivity. Similarly, practicing farmers exhibited higher household dietary diversity scores (HDDS) (7.84) compared to non-practicing farmers (6.9), highlighting the potential of CA in improving dietary diversity and nutritional outcomes. Based on these findings, recommendations are proposed to address identified challenges and promote the adoption of CA, including implementing policies to ensure equitable resource distribution, strengthening extension services, and enhancing access to inputs and technical support. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of CA in addressing agricultural challenges and enhancing food security in Bindura District, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to overcome implementation barriers and maximize its benefits for smallholder farmers.
