This study investigated the impact of improvised chemistry experiments on students’ understanding and performance at Chasiyatende Secondary School, a rural school in Zimbabwe where limited laboratory resources often hinder effective science instruction. The aim was to examine whether the use of improvised materials could enhance conceptual understanding, increase learner engagement, and improve academic performance in chemistry. A mixed-methods design was employed, incorporating pre- and post-tests, questionnaires, teacher interviews, and classroom observations. Findings revealed a significant improvement in students’ performance after exposure to improvised experiments, with post-test scores markedly higher than pre-test results. Learners expressed greater motivation and interest, while teachers observed improved engagement, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. Despite these positive outcomes, the study identified several challenges, including a shortage of suitable materials, time constraints, limited teacher training, and safety concerns. Nonetheless, opportunities such as promoting innovation, resourcefulness, and inclusivity in science learning were also highlighted. The study concludes that improvised chemistry experiments offer a practical and effective strategy for enhancing student learning in resource-limited environments. It recommends strengthening teacher capacity through training, encouraging innovative classroom practices, and integrating improvisation into curriculum implementation to improve the teaching and learning of chemistry in under-resourced schools.
