The Effects of rapid currency devaluation on the livelihood strategies of young people in ward 7 Katanga, Norton, Zimbabwe
-
Abstract
-
Rapid currency devaluation has emerged as a critical challenge affecting the socio-economic stability of many developing nations. In Zimbabwe, this phenomenon has severely impacted the livelihood strategies of young people, particularly in high-density urban communities. This study employed a mixed-methods design, combining both qualitative and quantitative approaches. A sample of 40 youth (aged 15–35) from Ward 7 Katanga, Norton was selected using purposive and convenience sampling. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, in-depth interviews, key informant interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observation, and analysed thematically alongside basic descriptive statistics. Findings revealed that respondents experienced a sharp decline in purchasing power, difficulty accessing basic needs (food, education, healthcare), and rising financial stress, largely driven by inflation and shrinking formal job opportunities. Coping mechanisms included informal trading (78.9%), casual labour (44.7%), family support (84.2%), and in some cases, illegal activities (13.2%) or migration aspirations. However, these strategies were often only partially effective, contributing to further vulnerability, insecurity, and psychosocial distress. Participants strongly advocated for currency stabilisation (97.4%), inflation control (97.4%), job creation (94.7%), and youth-focused entrepreneurship support (92.1%). The study underscores how uncontrolled currency devaluation erodes key livelihood assets, limits resilience, and demands integrated interventions that combine macroeconomic reforms with targeted youth support and inclusive social protection.
