- Abstract
- Zimbabwe is one of the counties that failed to attain an objective of Education for All (EFA) by 2015 and by now is struggling to meet equal access to education to all. The initiative was committed to different efforts to advance children’s access to education, mostly girls, who face difficulties engrained in socio-cultural and gender stereotypes. This study explores the impacts of these gender disparities on education in Bindura District, Zimbabwe, focusing on the factors contributing to inequality and its effects on educational outcomes. Gender inequality in education is globally recognized that persists significantly in rural and socio-economically disadvantaged areas like Bindura. The research employed a qualitative approach, gathering data through ten interviews and forty questionnaires distributed to students, parents, teachers, and educational leaders. The analysis was done using descriptive statistics, content and thematic analysis with Microsoft excel. Findings revealed that gender disparities manifest through reduced access to education for girls, lower self-esteem, and societal expectations that prioritize boys' education. Structural barriers such as inadequate sanitation facilities and long travel distances to schools further exacerbate the problem, especially in rural settings. The study identified key contributors, including cultural norms, economic barriers, early marriages, and inadequate school resources, which disproportionately affect girls. It highlights how these factors lead to high dropout rates, limited academic achievements, and restricted career opportunities for girls, perpetuating cycles of poverty and inequality. The study also explored solutions to address these disparities. Respondents advocated for policy reforms, financial assistance for disadvantaged families, community engagement to challenge traditional norms, and infrastructure improvements in schools. Specific recommendations included providing scholarships for girls, re-entry policies for young mothers, and increasing the representation of female teachers to present themselves as role models. This research gives understanding on localized effects of gender inequality in education and emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions to promote educational equity. Addressing these disparities is essential not for personal consent rather for fostering sustainable community growth. Recommendations to deal with these impacts involve promoting girls’ education 5 initiatives, increase male engagement and accountability. Another recommendation from the study is that Ministries of Primary and Secondary Education, Labour and Social Welfare, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Development Enterprise among other government institutions to come up with more programs and awareness campaigns to teach people about the issues related to gender inequality. Gender sensitive in schools that help boys and girls to improve new orientation about capabilities of both males and females financial assistance, and targeted efforts to address cultural and societal barriers. Results provide important awareness for policymakers, tutors and interested party aiming to achieve gender parity in education within Bindura District and beyond.
