Abstract

This research explores social and economic effects of stigma on the lives of individuals with visible disabilities in Mabvuku and how stigma affects their daily living and future. Guided by social ecological theory and the stigma theory, the research utilizes a pragmatic paradigm that allows systematic analysis of complex social phenomena. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews and analyzed utilizing simple random sampling, purposive sampling as well as snowballing techniques to involve diverse respondents. The findings illustrate severe social and economic ramifications of stigma, for example, loneliness, limited employment opportunities and economic insecurity. The respondents elaborated on varied manifestations of stigma, such as labelling, stereotyping, social exclusion and discrimination, all of which hindered their social integration and economic advancement. The coping mechanisms involved support from family members and friends, involvement in focus groups and self-care practices, which imparted emotional resilience and belongingness. The experiences of individuals with visible disabilities underscore the need for more awareness and advocacy to challenge stereotypes in society. Based on these findings, the report formulates concrete policy-making recommendations focusing on inclusiveness and accessibility. Stigma-reducing publicity and education in healthcare-seeking communities are essential, complemented by the development of support services that address the needs of disabled individuals. Furthermore, promoting disability led projects can give them the feeling of agency and belonging to their social settings. In conclusion, these results point to the essential need for systemic change to improve the social and economic status of residents with visible disabilities in Mabvuku.
