- Abstract
- This study explores the effects of the rampant increase of informal settlements in Harare, with a specific focus on Hopley and Amsterdam settlements. The research investigates the social, economic, and environmental impacts of these unregulated developments, which have proliferated due to rapid urbanization, population growth, and inadequate housing policies. Data was collected through interviews, field observations, and secondary sources to assess the living conditions, access to basic services, and challenges faced by residents. Findings reveal that these settlements are characterized by poor infrastructure, lack of sanitation, insecure land tenure, and limited access to health and education services. The study also highlights the environmental degradation and strain on municipal resources caused by the informal expansion. The paper concludes with policy recommendations aimed at improving urban planning, strengthening housing delivery systems, and integrating informal settlements into the formal urban framework for sustainable development.
