Children learn better when they interact with items, tools and people in their environment. Provision of creative fun-filled environment boosts children’s learning. The main goal of this study was to assess the role of social media in shaping gender identity in education. The study was guided by empirical evidence. The study adopted the case study research design. The target population comprised of 50 head teachers, 150 teachers, 100 parents or guardians. The study applied the sample size of 30 head teachers, 85 teachers and 50 parents or guardians. Convenience and judgmental sampling were applied to select the respondents who participated in the study.
The main research instrument was the questionnaire. According to the majority of the respondents
social media is a set of web applications that rely on the participation of mass groups of users. Also the majority of the respondents’ gender identity is a personal conception of oneself as male or female. In addition the majority of the respondents revealed that they believed that there was common gender. The study established that majority of children are exposed to social media at home. The study found out that at home, most children spend most of their time on social media. The majority of respondents revealed that whatsApp was the most used social media platform in Zimbabwe. Thus the majority of respondents revealed that gender identities are constructed through social media because it provides possibility for people to present and identify themselves as males or females. Thus the majority of the respondents revealed that parents must exercise
control on the choice of social media for their children are exposed to. The study recommends
that Parents must also control the volume of social media content accessed by their children this
could be by limiting the time spent on social media. The parents need to vouch the content of social media that their children are exposed to ensure that they avoid negative effects of mass media - Date
