East Province. - Abstract
-
The researcher conducted a study on the barriers to effective chemistry teaching and learning in the rural
schools of Marondera District, Mashonaland East Province. The study is sought to establish the barriers to effective chemistry teaching and learning in rural schools at form 3 and the strategies that can be adopted to address these challenges at the two purposively sampled schools under investigation. This study was conducted in two rural schools offering Chemistry in Marondera West district. The mixed approach methodology was used in the study. The sample population consisted of 4 Chemistry teachers and 20 learners (both girls and boys). Specifically it used in-depth structured interviews to collect data from teachers and heads of departments, observations were done by the researcher on the two schools and questionnaires were used to collect data. The observations were made at the two schools for the researcher to have first-hand information on how chemistry lessons were conducted and on the availability of resources. Gathered data generated themes on which analysis was based. The study established that there was a lack of appropriate instructional materials, shortage of chemistry teachers, and congested timetable, lack of study time and proximity of learners to the school. The study recommend that school science laboratories should be sufficiently equipped with relevant equipment to help provide pragmatic culture orientation to the learners in question. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should articulate a clear policy on inclusivity backed up by financial resource
support covering both rural and urban schools. - Date
