- Abstract
-
The integration of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in education has become a crucial aspect of modern teaching and learning. In the field of chemistry, ICTs have the potential to enhance teaching and learning experiences, making them more engaging, interactive, and effective. However, the successful integration of ICTs in chemistry teaching requires a high level of preparedness among teachers.
This study, therefore, sought to assess the the teachers preparedness in integrating ICT in chemistry teaching in Gwenungu cluster. The researcher used interpretivism paradigm,
descriptive survey method and mixed method strategy. The study sample size was 18. Participants
were selected using purposive and simple random sampling techniques. Data was analysed through the use of thematic and descriptive statistical analysis methods. The major findings of this study were; (a) the major ICT tools which are currently used by teachers include audio and visual devices and smartphones, (b) teachers are experiencing various challenges in integrating ICT in Chemistry, the challenges include, lack of ICT resources, lack of ICT supporting infrastructure, low competency in ICT and teachers’ negative attitude towards ICT integration and (c) teachers preparedness in integrating ICT is mostly influenced by technological competence and attitudes. It was recommended that teachers in rural areas need to be re-trained through ICT short courses for educators so that they can be in a position to be able to integrate ICT in Chemistry and government and various stakeholders should provide rural schools with adequate ICT resources
and supporting infrastructure so that teachers can be able to use them in teaching Chemistry. - Date
