a case of Chegutu district, Zimbabwe. - Abstract
-
This study was on the effects of instructional
materials on physics learners’ academic performance at Ordinary Level in secondary schools under Mashonaland West province. The motive behind the research was to figure out whether the use of instructional materials in the process of teaching and learning influences students’ academic performance in physics. The study went on to examine the effectiveness of the instructional materials used by the teachers to the students as well as the difficulties faced by the teachers in preparation and use of teaching aids. The researcher decided to use a mixed approach, which consists of both quantitative and qualitative research approachesbecause of its nature and relevancy to this study. The researcher used questionnaires and interviews on the research instruments. The major finding of the research clearly showed that appropriate use of instructional materials has a positive influence on students’
academic performance. According to the responses from the head of school, the results established that most of teachers are relying on textbooks than the use of instructional materials, which is leading to poor performance in physics learners. Besides pre-service training, teachers showed that they had not been receiving any other form of training based on how to prepare and use teaching aids in lesson delivery. However, the researcher managed to come up with some recommendations, which might be used to rectify the situation. These findings are expected to enhance policy and decision makings in matters regarding the use of instructional materials in the teaching and learning of physics.
