Effectiveness of using ICT in teaching and learning of chemistry in rural schools: a case of three secondary schools in Insiza
district, matabeleland province

The use of I.C.T (Information and communication technologies in Zimbabwe’s schools is of great importance. Both the teacher and the learner have a great role to play, teaching and learning through ICTs and also learning how to teach through them. Interestingly, the rate at which schools have embraced the use of ICTs is unprecedented. Zimbabwe has realized the significance of
technology and the competitive advantage in working to become knowledge-based society. The use of technology in the education sector allowed school children and even college students to learn within and beyond the classroom. The researcher sought to explain the relevance of introducing I.C.T in the teaching and learning of Chemistry in rural schools so as to reduce the I.C.T gap between rural and urban schools. The researcher acknowledged the efforts of various stakeholders in education in introducing the ICT curriculum in rural schools as a commitment to bringing science and technology to the rural pupil. In addition, I further explore the progress that has been made by rural schools in Matebeleland South in the teaching and learning of chemistry. In the process, the research found that most rural schools have not fully embraced the use of ICT in the learning on chemistry due to a number of challenges. The study also found that most rural
that have received donated computers have not been capacitated to fully utilise the new technology
for the benefit of rural students, teachers and the community. As a result, most of gadgets have been lying idle due to lack of proper infrastructural facilities as well lack of trained ICT teachers.
The study recommends that stakeholders in education to facilitate ICT development in rural
schools in rural Matebeleland so as to increase access, quality and equity in education for sustainable rural development in rural Matebeleland Insiza district - Date
