- Abstract
-
This study sought to explore the influence of gender differences on the progression of female learners’ progression in Advanced Level Mathematics. The study was grounded in interpretivist paradigm and qualitative methodology approach. In this study the purposively selected sample was made of 12 female learners and 5 Mathematics teachers. Data was generated through the focus group discussion and interview. The generated data was thematically analysed. From the analysed and discussed data it was revealed that sex role socialization had an influence on female learners’ progression in Advanced Level Mathematics. This was perpetuated by stereotyping and patriarchal beliefs which assign roles according to ‘masculinity’ and ‘femininity.’ The participants acknowledged the existence of various challenges that hinder female learners’ progression in Advanced Level Mathematics. It against these findings that this study concluded that gender
differences (femininity and masculinity) had an influence on female learners’ progression in
Advanced Level Mathematics. Grounded in the conclusion of this study it can be recommended
that teachers and policymakers should conduct professional development programs to address and
eliminate unequal treatment of female learners in Mathematics teaching and learning. - Date
