This study investigated the factors that affect teaching of physics practicals at Advanced level; a
case study of high schools in Insiza district. The choice of this study was motivated by the
declining pass-rate on 6032 paper 4 whilst students perform exceptionally well in other section
of 6032 papers. The situation is dire to the extent that some schools score zero percent in paper
four. Specifically the study was set to achieve three objectives namely to examine the effects of practical work on students’ overall performance in Physics; to investigate the effects of practical
work on students’ attitudinal change in Physics, to assess the influence of practical work in Physics on students’ acquisition of science process skills; to find out whether shortage of laboratory apparatus can be a problem in effective teaching of physics at A level. The study also sorts to find out the importance of a well-equipped and resourced laboratory in effective teaching of physics practicals. The study targeted four schools, seven physics teachers and forty-four A
level learners. The study was a descriptive survey design. The teachers were given questionnaires and the data was presented using simple tables, learners were subjected to interviews by the H.O.D’s of their schools. The results showed that most schools in Insiza district do not have properly functioning labs, moreover, there is lack of laboratory apparatus which is one of the problems being faced by teachers in effective teaching of physics practicals.
The second results showed that learners have negative attitude towards physics practicals. Lastly
the results also showed most teachers strongly agreed that physics practicals enhance the
teaching and learning of physics at A level. The study recommended that schools should renovate the laboratory to meet national standards, it also recommended that schools should place a budget for buying of laboratory apparatus, the researcher also recommended that teachers should motivate learners to curb negative attitude towards physics practicals, lastly the researcher recommended that teachers should improvise where possible to curb the shortage of some apparatus. - Date
