This research project sought to assess the preparedness of schools in Zimbabwe for the
implementation of the competence-based chemistry curriculum. The competence-based approach emphasizes the development of practical skills, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities in students. The study fell under the case study design. The target population of the study was 220 form four chemistry students, 5 chemistry teachers and 5 school heads; making a total of 230. Purposive and convenience sampling techniques were used in selecting 32 students, 2 chemistry teachers, and 2 school heads, all drawn from 2 secondary schools
offering chemistry at ordinary level. The research instruments used were questionnaires and an observation checklist. Data was analysed using descriptive statistics. The major findings were that schools did not have adequate facilities and materials for a successful implementation of the competence-based chemistry curriculum. It was also discovered that teachers’ requisite knowledge was not fully at par with the demands of the curriculum. From the findings, the study recommended that basic facilities and material such as sinks, water supply, first aid kits, and new curriculum textbooks should be made available in schools. It was also recommended that in service training of chemistry teachers should quickly be carried out in order to equip the educators with adequate knowledge and skills required for the
