- Abstract
- The basis of this research project was to investigate errors made by secondary school learners in addition and subtraction of directed numbers at Chitekedza barracks high school in Mount Darwin District. The study has been done by means of conducting questionnaires for learners and teachers The other instruments used in gathering data was the use of pre-test and post-test written by form two learners. The sample size constitute of 4 teachers and 21 learners. The same test was written by 15 learners in order to investigate on errors made by secondary school learners in addition and subtraction of directed numbers. The data was gathered was analysed and presented in form of pie chart and stem and leaf diagram. Upon the completion of the research, the researcher managed to summarise and draw out the conclusions basing on the findings. The study revealed that the teaching methods that are used by the teachers have a positive or negative impact on the ability, attitudes and moral of learners. This was evidenced by the difference in the learning behaviour and the results obtained in the test by the two classes with the same abilities. It was concluded that teachers need to emphasize on use of directed numbers in order to minimise errors and teacher should revise methods of teaching they use and work out best plans to come up with suitable teaching methods that suit a particular lesson. It was recommended that more practical learning should be done at Mathematics so that activities are connected to social studies. Educators need to greatly plan for the Mathematics lessons so that initial framework of content would be available.
