- Abstract
- This research meant to do an analysis of ICT tools used in the teaching and learning of secondary school mathematics at a school in Mbire district. Mathematics as one of the subjects taught in secondary schools and in other pre university education levels is very important and compulsory and its importance in the admission requirement into universities in the country cannot be over emphasized. According to Nziramasanga (1996) the use of ICT in teaching of mathematics has been considered as one of the best methods to ensure quality mathematics education for the pupils. However, as was shown by this study teachers at the school studied are failing to adequately utilize ICT in the teaching and learning of Mathematics. In this study a qualitative research approach was used because it produces the thick (detailed) description of participants’ feelings, opinions, and experiences; and interprets the meanings of their actions. The population for this study was made up of four (4) members of the school administration, four (4) teachers who teach mathematics, and thirty (30) learners doing mathematics at a high School in Mbire District. The study employed a multi-stage sampling technique which incorporated purposive sampling and a convenience sampling procedure. Some of the made recommendations include the idea that the government should donate ICT materials to schools so as to encourage the use of ICT in the teaching and learning of mathematics in primary. The government must also improve the learning environment by satisfying different participants in the educational sector, starting with educators who should be paid better salaries so as motivate them to go beyond teaching using traditional methods and adopt ICT tools in the teaching and learning of mathematics
