- Abstract
- The objectives of the study were to investigate into the effects of motivation on teacher performance among chemistry teachers ; A case of study of Two High Schools in Hurungwe District, Zimbabwe at O level, to identify the obstacles or factors militating against teacher motivation efforts among chemistry teachers in rural schools and to identify strategies or possible solutions to build and enhance motivation among chemistry teachers in Zimbabwe’s rural schools. The study used a qualitative case study design. Data was obtained from participants using a number of data collection methods like in depth interviews and key informant interviews. Thematic analysis was used to analyse data. Four a priori themes used were role of motivation, levels of motivation, challenges of motivating teachers, and ways to improve motivation of teachers. Challenges like lack of proper remuneration, poor working conditions, poor performance among students, high prices of basic commodities, inadequate resources among others were identified as all leading to very low levels of motivation among chemistry teachers in rural areas. To this end it was recommended that the government incentivize teachers, increase their salaries or at least pay their salaries in foreign currency. Improvement of working conditions and more effort and commitment from students were also identified as ways to enhance teacher motivation.
