- Abstract
- This study examined the relevance of mathematics education in development of life skills utilising Mashambanhaka Secondary School in UMP District, Zimbabwe as a case study. A construcvist approach to learning guided the study. An interpretivist paradigm and qualitative approach were employed to carry out the research. The study was also of a case study design and utilised interviews, observation and document analysis to collect data from ten mathematics teachers and five form four learners. Non probability, judgemental purposive sampling was utilised. Among the findings of the study were that one aspect of the relationship between mathematics and the development of life skills is positive in that these two are complementary. Mathematics has several significant effects on the development of life skills among secondary school learners. One of the most valuable effects of mathematics in the developing of life skills among learners at secondary school is that maths helps to develop functional skills. Furthermore, the acquisition of problem solving skills among learners is one of the prominent effects of mathematics on the development of life schools among learners at secondary school. Several challenges hinder the utility of mathematics in the development of life skills among learners at secondary school. One of the most prominent of those challenges are the negative attitudes that were exhibited by some learners towards mathematics. Among the recommendations of the study are that the MoPs must ensure that regular in-service teacher training is provided to maths teachers to ensure that their competencies remain current, relevant and comprehensive. School administrators are encouraged to ensure that adequate material and technological resources are availed to learners to make mathematics education more engaging, fun and simpler to learn.
