- Abstract
- This research aimed to seek an insight on the underlying factors contributing to the observed disparities in mathematics performance between day school learners of Mkoba 3 high school and boarding learners of Thornhill high in Gweru district. Data generation was, analysis and interpretation was grounded in interpretivist paradigm and qualitative approach. In generating data interviews and questionnaires were used. Purposive sampling method was used to select one Mathematics teacher from each school. Additionally, 10 learners doing Ordinary level Mathematics were conveniently selected. The generated data was analyzed according to emerging themes. Basically, the research major findings are that most day school learners walk long distances from home to school and therefore are left with little or no time to do school work at home. They come from poor backgrounds where parents fail to provide resources necessary in learning mathematics, such as calculators and smartphones. The researcher also discovered that boarding school learners conduct ceminas and mathematics clubs that allow them to discuss mathematical concepts outside the learning environment (classroom). Parents need to be informed on the requirements of the learning area so that they support children in order to boost their interest in Mathematics. Strategies considered also included, teacher training programs, so that teachers are continuously informed on the changes of the curriculum. The researcher recommends day school administrators to support the Mathematics department with resources such as ICT tools to make teaching and learning of Mathematics interesting.
