Abstract
The researcher conducted a study to investigate the effects of motivation on form 3 Biology students: Case of 2 Mazowe’s selected Secondary Schools- Mashonaland central province. The study sought to establish the strategies that can be adopted to improve motivation on biology students in schools under investigation. This study was conducted in two high schools in Mazowe district. The study used a qualitative research methodology. The study sampled 6 teachers teaching biology, 2 heads of schools and 22 biology learners. Specifically it used in-depth structured interviews, questionnaire, observations and focus-group discussions to gather data. Focus Group Discussions were done with 2 groups of learners whist interviews were done with teachers and the heads. The observations were made in biology lessons to have first-hand information on how lessons were conducted. Data was analysed using themes that originated from the gathered data. The themes are as follows passion, resources, teaching strategies and creating learning environment. The study established that there was a lack of passion, inadequate teaching materials, high teacher-pupil ratio, and poor teaching strategies and need to create learning environment. The study recommends that school science laboratories should be sufficiently equipped with laboratory equipment to help accommodate all learners and have all learners in pragmatism. Also a number of teaching strategies should be used by teachers so as to motivate students to learn biology. The learning environment for students should be conducive for them to be motivated to learn. The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education should articulate a clear policy on inclusion and provide adequate financial support to all the schools to support learners and teachers.
