- Abstract
- Providing employees with training is a rising issue at hand and needs immediate consideration and attention. Many organisations have problems with providing employees with training that is inappropriate and efficient considering the need and the skill set they contain and without targeting an employee’s capacities and deficiencies meaning organisations are providing training not necessarily targeting an issue at hand. Training and development (TD) plays a crucial role in pushing employees from one stage to another leading to organisational effectiveness. Its roots extend to efficiency, effectiveness, productivity and better profitability. Most organisations, that is including Tobacco Industry and Marketing Board (TIMB) are fully aware of this aspect hence they partaking in putting investments in the and resources in TD. However more evidence is required of them by organisational superiors such as executives of the proof that is provided by TD and how it can transform current employee performance to a greater level and into HCM effective performance. The study, therefore, sought to investigate the relationship between human resources training and development and departmental performance. TIMB head office with a population of 60 employees was the focus of the study, A sample of 14 employees consisting of managers, officers, clerks and other junior employees was drawn from the Human Capital Department at TIMB, more so, convenience sampling technique was used within the fore mentioned department. The researcher made use of questionnaires, interviews and secondary data sources to gather information. Tables, pie diagrams and reference charts were utilised to introduce the information. The data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The study laid out that there is a positive connection and relationship between HR training and development and departmental performance. Some of the benefits of training and development include, increased productivity, performance employee awareness and various other benefits. Furthermore, the study established that TD is a key strategy in enhancing employees’ performance within the organisation which will give the HCM department an advantage. The study, therefore, recommends the utilization of various training evaluation models, pre training analysis and audits for the betterment of the TD programmes. It also recommends more participation of managerial and non-managerial employees in training need analysis (TNA) than is currently the case.
